Woo-hoo vaccinations! Round 2 happened today. During some of our research we ran across a 2005 policy update from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that talked about the benefits of breastfeeding. Hiding among the well known health benefits for mom and baby was one that we had never heard before: the act of breastfeeding acts as a painkiller for the baby during a painful procedure.
We thought it would be a good idea to test this one out, and the nurse acquiesced to our request to do the shots while breastfeeding. Winnie didn’t even peep for the first one. She broke tempo with a “WTF was that!?” but didn’t cry out until the second prick, and by that time, the shots were done. A few quick minutes of snuggling and shushing and she was back on the breast, quiet and calm. It worked.
